A learning guide for practitioners in community sport and active recreation.

For sport and active recreation to have an impact in the community, it is vital that everyone involved in delivering activities understands what sport can contribute and what it can do best. There is a growing body of evidence from research studies and from the academic world that sport and physical activity are key players on a number of important Government and Local Government agendas. The Framework for Sport in England published in 2003 highlighted the contribution sport in its widest definition can make to improving the health of the community, contributing to safer and stronger communities, improving the educational performance of young people, and benefiting the local economic prospects.

Editor's comments - [  This learning guide brings together the experiences of a range of community intervention programmes that have been working in communities in England over the past seven years. Together they represent a “learning zone”, where local people have not just benefited from improved sporting opportunities, but have often seen real benefits to the daily lives of their community. In this guide we highlight those benefits across a number of cross-cutting strands.

The guide does not simply describe what has happened “on the ground”, as is the format for many reports on the achievements of individual intervention projects. It takes this information one step further and looks at the impact focusing on the views of real people on what they have achieved and how it has influenced their communities. The relationships built up with the community have been all about changing the way things are done. This guide provides some of the important lessons of how people have changed things for the better in their own communities.

The guide begins with a review of where these lessons have come from, how the information has been collected, and where the impact has been most effective. This final part of the introduction reflects the three dimensions in its title. Where has change been driven, what partnerships have been developed and what sort of outcomes have been delivered? The sections that follow look in detail at this impact on a number of areas of interest. Many will be familiar to sports practitioners; some will be new and thought provoking; yet more will be a challenge to the “profession” and its many volunteer community supporters not to just stand still and be content with more of the same.  ]  Reference this?Cryer, J.
