The management task is to make things happen - to ensure that the physical, human and financial resources which are available to an organisation are directed and controlled to produce the desired service and products.
Community use is a well established way of opening up sports facilities on school sites for the wider community, which entails a complex management situation. Community use is not a single organisation method of delivery, it is a partnership which brings with it a new and broader management challenge. The challenge for management is to create a synergy and ensure that a shared vision is adopted.
In 1992 and 1993 the Sports Councils' Management Awards focused on the management of sports facilities based on school sites. The purpose of this publication is to review the evolution of community use of school-based facilities and assess the impact of recent legislative change on those organisations in the community use partnership. It outlines the challenges ahead and explores future opportunities and threats to using school-based facilities in the development of sport and recreation for and with the community.
Editor's comments - [ This publication examines the changing relationship between education and leisure in the development of opportunities for the community in sport and recreation through increased access to facilities and programmes on school sites. It demonstrates the mutual benefits that can accrue for both the school and the community and offers practical advice based on evidence from the Sports Councils' Management Award (SCMA) which in 1992 and 1993 focused on assessing the management performance of sports facilities based on school sites. Whilst the majority of facilities visited comprised of enhanced local authority provision within school boundaries, the lessons learned, and range of approaches identified to bring school and community together, will be relevant to anyone seeking to increase access to school-based facilities. ] Reference this?Cryer, J.
