In the course of our research, we have come across many excellent initiatives and schemes and met many individuals who are dedicated to providing and improving sporting opportunities for disabled adults and children. It is very uplifting and encouraging to see such work going on, but what is missing is a sense of cohesion and linkages, whereby pilot projects and examples of best practice can be extended and rolled out across the county. There is a need for information and databases to be collated and shared to encourage increased participation and the development of sporting pathways, and where hard data can be used to support funding bids – both for specialist provision and to meet the needs for equity and accessibility within mainstream provision.
Of course, this situation is not unique to Devon, and it is part of the ethos of the emerging equity and inclusion agenda that the needs and aspirations of disabled people should be more actively addressed, through both mainstream and, where appropriate, specialist provision.
Using the findings from the research carried out in Devon over the 2005/6 period specific objectives and actions have been drawn up to enable the County Sports Partnership and other stakeholders to take the findings forward and enable disabled people in Devon to have improved access to opportunities for participation in sport at all levels.
