At the Sports Cabinet on 6 October 2000, the Government agreed to commit at least 100 million over four years to the World Class Performance Programme. The Sports Cabinet also concluded, however, that an urgent high level inquiry into the operations of the World Class Performance Programme was needed to ensure that this new investment would be spent efficiently and effectively. The review should also suggest improvements to the programme and address competitors concerns about the current structure. The second phase of the review should identify how the findings from the initial research link into the development of the UK Sports Institute.
